Older People's Project

The Government's policy and more locally the Mayor's policy towards its older community within the BME communities has also been vocal and consistent in its call for better protection, accessible service delivery aiming for a better quality life to our elderly.

Today's Arabic speaking elderly community in the borough of Kensington and Chelsea is made of mainly Moroccans. A small minority of Iraqi and Lebanese elderly is also prevalent particularly in the North of the Borough and generally within the Regent's Park Constituency.

Whilst we do not wish to dwell on our Community's vulnerability it is important however to admit that there is an enormous hurdle to overcome in order to move forward and offer better service delivery to this client group.

Due to the serious language barrier our elderly are completely ignorant of their rights to benefits and other entitlement to public services. They have always lived with the minimum yet they have given so much. They are isolated and socially excluded. This client group in our view is not taking part at all in the development of the Community initiatives in contrast to the better government ideology, because local authorities within the greater London when dealing with the Older population of the Arabic-speaking community tend to play a lip service as real service delivery must be matched with realistic funding, support and consistent encouragement.
